The Silver tequilas are the best tequilas to experience its power but best consumed in climates/venues that are understood and when there is interest in either festive and/or uplifting occasions. Mixing the Silver tequilas is common (ie. margaritas) and wise for this spirit in an array of choices.
Reposado tequilas are the special choice for this spirit because the substance sits in oak barrels for a few months before its bottling. This can be mixed but best enjoyed while sipping over ice to truly enjoy the experience in almost any climate that is natural.
Anejo tequilas need be consumed with great care. It is suggested that these are not everyday tequilas to consume but for very specific purpose. When this is understood it is consumed well either over ice or even neat (depending on the circumstance). Informed drinkers need consume this tequila. The aging of 2-3 years in oak barrels (usually from US whiskey distilleries) gives a complex arrangement to the spirit that can limit the spirit's reach in favor of the oak's precedence. Still can be enjoyed purposefully in the right climate.
Since this was first posted I tried the anejo again last night (1/25/14) and added lime and pure agave syrup. It worked much better and alleviated the concerns I had about the spirit on its own. This mixology addresses a fundamental issue that continues to surface in American culture with regard to assimilating cultural identities in a nation this diverse.
